Whoo-whoo! Slowly and steadily, the train starts moving further away from the depot as the locomotive whistles on. In a minute’s time, the sun has faded into the background and the track is now canopied by towering redwood groves.
There is no more unique way to explore these giant trees than aboard the steam train at Roaring Camp. The journey features steam locomotives dating back to the 1880s and steep switchbacks in the woods. This is a good old-fashioned yet perfect train ride to learn about the railroad’s logging history and to breathe in a healthy dose of endorphins.

Tips:
- Reserve train tickets online: https://roaringcamp.com/excursions/redwood-forest-steam-train. Plan for extra travel time especially during the weekends, as there is usually heavy beach traffic on Highway 17.
- Combine your itinerary by visiting Henry Cowell Redwood State Park as well. The park is less than 5 minutes’ walk from the train depot and boasts beautiful yet accessible trails to view the redwoods.
