The road undulates and winds on. Every turn around the cliffs leads to another stunning view of the coastline, where the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean converge. Here, the color blue gives way to more nuanced definitions–be it cobalt, azure, or another shade in-between or beyond. This is Big Sur, a 90-mile stretch of pristine beauty along coastal California Highway 1.
Such beauty is further accentuated by the coastal fog, which typically burns off in the afternoons but that is not always predictable. The resulting views from the same spots are dramatically different, with or without the fog. No single trip is the same–this is the allure of Big Sur.
My personal favorites from north to south:
- Garrapata State Park
- Bixby Creek Bridge
- Hurricane Point
- Andrew Molera State Park
- Nepenthe
- McWay Falls
