You are not mistaken. That is indeed an elk, and in fact, it’s a party!
Meet Tomales Point, a 10-mile out-and-back trail at Point Reyes National Seashore. Stunning coastal views are guaranteed by default as you hike along the Pacific Ocean, but what makes this trail unique is the occasional elk sighting at the Tule Elk Reserve. What a joy just to watch these incredible creatures graze to their heart’s content and roam freely!

Tips:
- Wear hiking boots, long sleeves, and long pants. While elevation gain is minimal on this trail, the last stretch of the hike is unmaintained and sandy. Proper clothing would make the hiking experience more pleasant. Learn more about the trail: https://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/upload/map_tomalespoint.pdf
- Observe the elks from the distance and try not to disturb them. See more elk watching tips here: https://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/wildlife_viewing_tuleelk.htm
