Early October transforms the entire Eastern Sierra into a vast, golden tapestry. A drive along Highway 395 during this time of the year feels like entering another world. To the east, the White and Inyo Mountains guard the horizon, and to the west, the Sierra Nevada rise in rugged contrast. Between these two mighty ranges lies a ribbon of road stretching endlessly through open valleys, lit by golden aspens against the rugged peaks. Traveling through this vast corridor, you can’t help but feel small against the immensity of it all.
Points of interest
- Bishop Canyon: North Lake and Lake Sabrina are spectacular in the morning. Note that some sections of the road are unpaved. The stretch leading up to Cardinal Village Resort is especially scenic.
- June Lake Loop: Best enjoyed in the afternoon when the light hits the water just right.
- Silver Lake: Visit earlier in the day for the best lighting and reflections.

Tips
- Peak foliage: The first two weeks of October are typically the best. Check the California Fall Color Map for up-to-date reports: https://californiafallcolor.com/map/
- Stay in Mammoth Lakes: A perfect base to explore nearby areas with easy access to Hwy 395.
- Getting there: From the Bay Area or other western regions, you will likely pass through Tioga Pass (Hwy 120) or Sonora Pass (Hwy 108). Check for closures, as early snow can shut down these routes. If traveling via Tioga Pass, you will pass through Yosemite National Park, which requires an entrance fee.
- Plan for 3 days at least: You will have time to explore and photograph at your own pace. A 2-day weekend works too, but expect long drives each day.
- Dress in layers: Mornings at higher elevations can be chilly even if afternoons are warm and sunny.
