This is Highway 1, the same rugged coast where shifting hues of the Pacific Ocean blend with the iconic coastal fog. But this is not Big Sur. This is Mendocino, its lesser-known northern counterpart. Here, the cliffs are just as dramatic, yet the solitude feels even more profound.
It is a place of contrasts, where rugged terrain and the ocean’s force are softened by wildflowers like lupines, poppies, and seaside daisies that brighten the landscape in spring and summer. A visit here feels peaceful, yet charged with understated energy and beauty. That is why Mendocino does not need to shout for attention—it simply invites you to linger and take it all in.

Tips
- Windbreakers and hats are essential. It is often breezy, especially along the cliffs.
- If you travel from the north, the stretch on Highway 1 from Leggett to Fort Bragg is VERY windy and narrow, with one switchback after another lasting ~45 miles. Be prepared for the twists and turns if you are driving a larger vehicle, or are less confident in driving under such conditions in general.
