This is not Utah, nor Arizona. This is Annie’s Canyon Trail, a 1.6-mile hidden gem just minutes from the heart of Solana Beach and can be completed under an hour. The first half of the trail is flat and offers peaceful views of the San Elijo Lagoon, but the final stretch is where the adventure begins. Here, you will come across a sign marking two diverging paths and make your choice: a switchback route to the left, or a slot canyon hike to the right.
If you are up for it, take the right—the reward is well worth it. You will wind (or squeeze) your way through narrow, water-carved slot canyons with steep inclines that feel straight out of the iconic Southwest landscape. Once you reach the top, you will be treated with a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area before making your descend. What a hike—short, yet fun-packed!

Tips
- You can start the hike from either the Solana Hills or North Rios Trailhead. Street parking is available at both.
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for the steep climbs at the final stretch. It is best to hike hands-free, so bring a backpack if you need to carry water and other items.
- Do not forget sun protection as the trail has limited shade.
