Entering the Avenue of the Giants feels like stepping into another world. Towering coast redwoods, with some soaring over 300 feet and living more than 2,000 years, form a densely green yet dreamlike canopy. It is an iconic 31-mile scenic byway that winds through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to over 17,000 acres of the largest remaining old-growth coastal redwood forest with remarkably minimal human interference. Cruising beneath these ancient giants is both a surreal and humbling experience, and a powerful reminder of nature’s enduring presence and timeless grace.
As John Steinbeck once wrote: “The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always.” Take a drive here, and you will understand exactly what he meant.

Tips
- Plan at least 2–3 hours for the drive, including time to stop and take in the serenity. While the route can be completed within 75–90 minutes, its beauty is best savored slowly.
- Download offline maps. Cell reception is minimal to nonexistent.
- Top hikes include Founders Grove and Rockefeller Grove. Even a short walk amongst these giants is unforgettable.
