The Big Sur coast has a way of revealing itself only to those willing to work for it. At Andrew Molera State Park, that work begins at the edge of the Big Sur River. Here, you will have to pull off your shoes, wade through water that is colder than the warm day had promised, and proceed with a bracing jolt before the trail even starts.
The park is intentionally undeveloped, keeping crowds thin and the beach feeling genuinely earned. The Molera Beach stretches over 2.5 miles of pristine sand, dotted with driftwood and wide open at low tide. Hike in on the Beach Trail or the parallel River Trail: both reach the oceanfront, both require real shoes, and either way the solitude at the end is the point.
Come prepared, come unhurried, and let the cold water wake you up before the ocean rewards you.

Tips
- Pack for the crossing: Roll-up pants or quick-dry shorts, hiking shoes, a hiking pole for balance, a windproof layer for the exposed beach, and snacks for a proper picnic once you’re there.
- Bridge is seasonal: The footbridge over the Big Sur River is in place from mid-June through October only. Outside that window, plan to wade.
- Entry fee: $10 per vehicle. CA State Parks Pass is accepted.
