Literally translated as “Storm Mountain”, the name Arashiyama is inspired by the wind that blows down Mount Atago and sweeps away cherry blossoms and maple leaves in the region. A trip to Arashiyama, however, involves less turbulence but more tranquility. In fact, it is such an idyllic getaway that in just 30 minutes’ time, you find yourself in awe of a different landscape on the outskirts of western Kyoto.
How to spend a perfect day in Arashiyama —
- Stroll along the Togetsu-kyo Bridge, and take in the picturesque scenery. Bonus points if you can visit during the cherry blossom or fall foliage season.
- Pay homage to Tenryu-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple and UNESCO Heritage Site known for its zen garden. Check opening hours: https://www.tenryuji.com/en/visit/
- Visit the famous Bamboo Grove, and immerse yourself in the endless rows of towering bamboo trees and greenery. It is open 24/7 and admission free.
